The notoriously challenging par-5 14th hole at Maderas has been named to Southland Golf's Best 18 Holes in San Diego. Southland selected its Best 18 in its December issue. You can read the complete list here.

This lengthy hole, which concludes with an elevated canyone carry, is known to be particularly tough on first-timers, but they seem to immediately embrace the challenge of turning bogey into birdie and yearn for another crack at No. 14. Though long, the hole is more about placement than strategy and to that end some of our more experienced players actually hit hybrid off the tee here to play short of the bunkers.

Best of luck on your second shot, though, because much club over a 7-iron here on the approach is a nervous proposition due to the elevation and possible wind, which can require clubbing up twice. Going long is just fine here, though, as there's a backstop that, particularly in the winter with the rough dormant, will likely release you ball back to the green. How do you play No. 14?
